The concert of rock veterans in July 9 in Lucerna
11.5.2005 | Lidové noviny
PRAGUE The concert of rock veterans on the 9th of July in the big hall in Lucerna. You will be entertained by Hungarian band Omega and also by home band Blue Effect. János Kóbor, the singer and also the establishing member of Omega, visited Prague on Wednesday. Stadion band Since 1980’s Omega has been in the position of superstar in Hungaria, and its members have organised concerts only in big halls or at stadions. They have kept this position up to this day. In 1999, ninety thousand fans came to a concert at Népstadión in Budapest. Speciffically, these giant concerts represent the main interest and also the source of income of the band. ‘’Whereas in the past we used to sell hundreds of thousands pieces of each album, nowadays we are glad when we sell twenty thousand pieces.’’ said Kóbor. Even though Lucerna represents rather intimate setting for Omega, visitors will not miss even a visual show. János Kóbor added that the program would consist not only of the oldest hits of the band but also of the most new songs from their album. The concert should take place this fall. The origin of the band dates to 1962, and four years later the band produced four singles which contained also the hit of British Rolling Stones Paint It Black. The next year Gábor Presser, a key player and a composer, joined the band, and Omega started to fully concentrate on primal production in mother language. The breakage came in 1968 when the band managed to make a tour around the Great Britain, where they played with famous Traffic. The celebrities as Eric Clapton or George Harrison came to see the concert. The following years Omega produced albums in English and in German, too. However, at the concerts they presented themselves in native language. Kóbor explained that it was easier to express their emotions and the contents of the texts in Hungarian language. Gábor Presser left Omega at the beginning of 1980’s, and he devoted himself to a newly established band – not less famous – named Locomotiv GT. Kóbor said that Omega celebrated its biggest success in Switzerland, Germany, and in the states around the Mediterranean Sea. Within the beat festival in 1971, they made their visit to Lucerna in Prague. In principle, Hungarian rock was very popular in Czechoslovakia during 1970‘s and 1980‘s, and it was Omega which made a big deal in that. „The rock age ended for me with U2" During 43 years of existence Omega passed through changes of style, which more or less reflected the happenings at the world rock scene. The actual course of events in music is not familiar to Kóbor: „The rock age ended for me with the band U2. The bands from the last century seem to me more real than the modern ones. I still watch the happenings at the rock scene; however, I do not find inspiracy for me there.” Even though it is predictable that on the 9th of July Lucerna will serve as a place of “high school graduate party” and not as a place where rock history is made, as it was forty years ago, the influence of Omega on the musical orientation of at least one generation of Czech rockers was so intensive that the concert can be considered one of the main occurrences of rock spring in Prague. The singer János Kóbor He belongs to the constituent members of Hungarian Omega. Six schoolmates started to meet regularly in a clubroom in Budapest in the end of 1950’s. It was the time when even the land behind the Iron Curtain was attacked by rock’n’roll. Named Omega they had their first performance in 1962. “I still watch the happenings at the rock scene; however, I do not find inspiracy for me there.” said the singer Kóbor.
