Marian Gold: Every human being wants to live forever although everybody knows it is not possible
4.10.2004 | Národná obroda
An exclusive conversation with the singer and the leader of the music band called Alphaville. Your songs were very popular in socialistic Czechoslovakia in 1980`s. Did you know about your popularity behind the Iron curtain? -Yes, we had some information that we were popular in eastern Europe, and we were delighted by that. In 1986, we wanted to visit Democratic republic of Germany, but they did not let us publish our album there due to negative comunistic propaganda, so it was useless. Despite this fact, the popularity behind the Iron curtain was incredible. When did you hear about Slovakia for the first time? -When the Slovak republic was established, so it is not a long time ago. Did you visit us before your first concert here? -No, but when we came to Kosice for the first time several years ago, I was amazed by your wonderful nature. Your mountains and forests are beautiful. What do you thing about Slovak people? Certainly, you know some of them... -Yeah, but most of the peole we met was on our tours, in hotels, and at the evening parties; therefore, I suppose my image of Slovaks is not complete. I think you are very similar to Czech people. You are elegant, but still very conservative, and you guard your values. And I noticed that clocks in your hotels are always five minutes late...(laughter) And I like that you have hens in your gardens. It evokes nostalgy in me because when I was a little boy, I used to feed them... What do you think about Slovak women? - They are really very beautiful (laughter). Lets talk about your band. At the beginning of your career you took 10 years` break and you had no concerts. Why did you come back to stage in 1993? - I do not consider it as our comeback because we did not make real concerts before. We did not want to be regarded as an ordinary studio project makers that is why we came back to play in front of people. Till that time we dreamt about recording studio - a place where we could have realized our dreams and musical ideas. Everything we produced was done only by means of electronics and various kinds of instruments. We did not use real musical instruments, and we could not play on the stage with that. In the course of time, key-boards got modernized, samples started to be used, so we decided to do concerts. Besides, we wanted to share powerful stories hidden in our songs with people. I wanted so much to stand on the stage and tell people about their origin. One of your hits is called Forever Young. Do you still feel young? - No, unfortunately I am a mortal and I know that I must die one day (laughter). But now I am here and I compose songs. The song Forever Young is often misunderstood; it is not about immortality or eternal youth but about unreality. Every human being wants to live forever although everybody knows it is not possible. So your texts are also about philosophy... -Sure, none of our songs is a pop one. Our most popular songs carry a deep message. I realize that the song Big In Japan is considered commercial, but if people thought about its verses, they would find out that it expresses unusual feelings. And pop trash cannot do this. And what is your life-philosophy? -I believe that I will never lose my curiosity because it helps me get further and further. Due to my curiosity I can do music, combine words, and seek for new ideas. I cannot imagine my future without curiosity. People know a lot about you, but they know nothing about your family. Can you give away something about your close relatives? -I have three beautiful children, two girls and one boy. They are my life, they mean everything to me. I am single though.
